Attraction in Lincoln
In 1068, 2 years after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle on a site occupied since Roman times. It is one of only two castles in Britain built with two mottes (Lewes is the other example). The Castle was the focus of several military battles during the reign of King Stephen and King john and was besieged during
the Baron's war in the early 13th Century.
The Castle has been a centre of justice for the last 900 years and still houses Lincoln Assizes Court. Many original features still remain of the Castle including the magnificent wall walks and the original Victorian prison chapel, the only one of its kind in the world. The Castle also presents a full and varied events and education programme each year between March and September.
