Educated at London School of Economics. Served in Royal Air Force. Elected as MP in 1957. Held ministerial posts 1967-70. Disappeared in 1974 believed drowned but reappeared in Australia. Extradited to Britain in 1975 to face fraud and embezzlement charges, imprisoned. Became member of Social Democratic Party in 1982.


33 years ago on Christmas Eve 24 December 1974 Police at St Kilda in Melbourne, Australia arrested a man whose passport said he was Donald Clive Mildoon on suspicion of being the fugitive Lord Lucan wanted for murder.  He wasn’t.  He was actually the fugitive MP John Stonehouse wanted for fraud.
In June 1975 he was deported from Australia and on arrival in Britain promptly banged up in Brixton Prison in London.  His trial at “The Old Bailey” started on 27 April 1976 and lasted 76 days.  He got 7 years. 
On 28 August 1976 he resigned after 19 years as a Labour MP. 
As a Star (first offender) he started his sentence at Wormwood Scrubs Prison in London then went to Blundeston in Suffolk where I met him in June 1978 when I arrived from Wormwood Scrubs. 
On 14 August 1979, having served 3 1 years of his 7 year sentence, during which time he suffered 3 heart attacks and underwent open heart surgery, he was released on medical grounds.
In 1981 he married his former secretary Shelia Buckley ”The most attractive woman at The Palace of Westminster”.  She really was too. 
In 1984 they had a child.
On 14 April 1988 John died age 62 of a heart attack at home in Southampton.
