British hero of the week November 2nd 2009

Born in Edinburgh, Chris Hoy left Moray House School of Education (University of Edinburgh) with a degree in sports science in 1999.

Hoy is yet another of the British Olympians with a long history of sport that stretches way back into his early years. As a child he rode in competitive BMX events where the Scotsman had his first taste of two-wheel racing. He swapped the dirt for the boards and is now a Kilometre time trial specialist, having concentrated on the event after the Sydney Olympic games in 2000. Hoy took silver in the team sprint with Craig Maclean and Jason Queally in Sydney, his Olympic debut.

At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester he showcased his talent for the world to see by beating the then Olympic champion Jason Queally to win a gold medal. He went on to win a brilliant world title in Copenhagen. He defeated the four-time champion, Arnaud Tournant of France, by just one thousandth of a second. He added to this success by anchoring the three man British Team Sprint team to their first ever world title.

Chris secured a brilliant gold in the 1 km time trial on the opening day of track competition in Olympics at Athens in 2004 to give the Team GB Cycling team a tremendous boost.

Success continued into 2005 with another gold in the Team Sprint and recognition in the honours list. He also received two honorary doctorates.

2006 brought gold again in the Kilometre Time Trial at the World Championship. More gold came at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with another brilliant victory, but not in the event he may have expected. He finished 3rd for bronze in the Kilometre Time Trial but was part of the Scotland team which rode to victory in the team sprint.

In 2007 he was back in with World Championship gold in the Keirin, Team Pursuit and in his final Kilometre Time Trial to make it four world titles in only six years.

Chris Hoy was chosen to represent Great Britain at Track Cycling in the Team Sprint, Keirin and Sprint events for the Beijing Olympics of 2008.
