John Philips

Born in Bampton, Oxfordshire
Born on 30th of December 1676
Died on 15th of February 1709

Philips had originally intended becoming a doctor, but while at Christ Church College, Oxford, turned to poetry. He is chiefly remembered for The Splendid Shilling, the burlesque tale of a debtor; Blenheim; and Cyder whose Miltonic blank verse describes the cultivation of apples and their use in cider making, a noble subject however Johnson may have objected to it.
