After service in the Fleet Air Arm during WWII Jack Lewis gained a first in Zoology at Aberystwyth, where he remained to take a PhD and do post-doctoral research. From 1954 onwards he worked for Leeds University, from 1964 located at its Wellcome Marine Laboratory at Robin Hood’s Bay, which he headed from 1973 to 1982. Lewis was a pioneer in the field of coastal ecology, where his approach was to focus on the system rather than individual species as had generally been the case before his time.
