Studied art in Edinburgh, Paris and Oxford. Served with Red Cross in Balkan War. Fought in Nigerian regiment in WWI. Ill health forced retirement and he took up writing. Awarded James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The House of Children (1940). Other books included Moonlight (1946), Prisoner of Grace (1952) and Not Honour More (1955).
