Principal Towns: Leicester Loughborough Market Harborough Hinckley

Combine city style with rural relaxation in the beautiful county of Leicestershire. Discover quintessential English villages, historic market towns, grand stately homes, exciting visitor attractions, unusual shops, stylish restaurants and much, much more!

At the heart of the county lies the cosmopolitan city of Leicester, with many cultural, historic and leisure attractions. See real rockets and satellites at the award-winning National Space Centre, Roman ruins in Castle Park and German Expressionist paintings at New Walk Museum. Discover designer shops, classy café bars, exotic restaurants, colourful market stalls, and entertainment for every taste and pocket. Night or day there’s always something to do.

In contrast, the peaceful countryside around Leicester provides the perfect rural retreat. The landscape across the county varies dramatically, from the ancient volcanic rocks of Charnwood Forest with its rugged crags and wooded gorges, to the beautiful open uplands of High Leicestershire. Walking, cycling and horseriding are popular local activities. Enjoy a stroll around Bradgate Park, which is famous for its wild deer, or hire a barge and head for Foxton Locks, near Market Harborough , with its steep flight of ten locks along the Grand Union Canal.

Leicestershire’s market towns are well worth exploring. Melton Mowbray is famous for its market, pork pies, and creamy Stilton cheese whilst Market Harborough boasts a 17th century timber grammar school on stilts. See a bell being cast at Taylor’s Bellfoundry in Loughborough , and discover the castle ruins at nearby Ashby-de-la-Zouch , in the heart of Ivanhoe country.

If history is an interest, in the far north of the county stands the majestic Belvoir Castle , commanding magnificent views across the surrounding countryside. Stanford Hall , near Lutterworth, dates back to 1697 and has a motorcycle museum and 19th century flying machine. Donington-le-heath Manor house, near Coalville , was built in the 13th century and holds regular historical events.

Families will enjoy visiting the National Forest and experiencing Conkers, which provides an interactive exploration of the natural world. Snibston Discovery Park is a lively celebration of Leicestershire’s industrial past, whilst the Battle of Bosworth Visitor Centre will reveal the story of this famous battle that transformed English history. You can also hop on board a traditional steam train at Loughborough’s Great Central Railway – a good way to see the Leicestershire countryside in comfort!
