Historic Raby Castle, set in a 200 acre deer park, has been the home of Lord Barnards' family since 1626, when it was purchased by his ancestor, Sir Henry Vane, the eminent statesman and politician.

The castle was largely built in the 14th century by the Nevills, who owned until the rising of the north in 1569. Most of the interior now dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, although medieval features remain. As well as paintings by Reynolds and other masters, there is fine furniture and important china.

The great kitchen, little altered for 600 years, with its collection of Victorian copper utensils, was used daily until recently. In the coach house are the carriages and other horsedrawn vehicles used by the family.

Visitors may also enjoy the large walled gardens, whose new design blends the ancient Yew hedges and 200 year old Fig tree with newly created features.
