Greenham Common, Berkshire

Greenham Common is located near Newbury in Berkshire, England. The common was used as an airfield by the Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force during World War II . It was also used during the Cold War by the United States Air Force. The airfield was shut down in 1993 and the area is now heathland, an important home to a variety of rare plants and lichens. A peace camp called the 'Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp' was located on the site between 1981 and 2000 in protest at the deployment of nuclear cruise missiles there.
