Born on 2nd of June 1945
Long began his career as a land artist while a student at St Martinís School of Art, creating a track in grass in the countryside by walking over it repeatedly then photographing the result. His works tend to be ephemeral, made in the outdoors using found materials that are already part of their landscape, and use simple forms such as circles, spirals, and crosses, though he has also created pieces for galleries. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1989.
