Born 1937 - Welsh film and stage actor.


Stage debut in The Quare Fellow (1960) at Manchester. Very successful on stage and a member of the National Theatre company (1966-1973). Film appearances include The Lion in Winter, Audrey Rose, The Elephant Man, Howards End and Shadowlands. Television included War and Peace. Won Best Actor Academy Award in The Silence of the Lambs. Knighted in 1993 but renounced title in 2000 to become a US citizen.
