Gary Glitter Jailed
It wasnít something that came out when Michael Aspel handed Gary Glitter the big red book in the singerís 1992 appearance on This Is Your Life, celebrating the glam rockerís 30 years in music. Then he was everyoneís favourite ageing pop star, a self-parodying showman who appeared on stage in his trademark silver costumes. That all changed after Paul Francis Gadd, Glitterís real name, took a computer to be fixed at a PC World branch in Bristol in November 1997, and staff stumbled on a mass of pornographic images on the hard drive.
At his subsequent court case two years later in the same city Glitter admitted to amassing more than 4000 images of children suffering revolting sexual abuse. Some of the children, mainly but not exclusively girls, appeared to be as young as two; the oldest around 10.
The then 55-year-old singer was given a four month prison sentence, of which he served two, spent in solitary confinement to protect him from feared retribution by other prisoners. It appears incarceration did not change prisoner EW4473, as he later went on to commit further offences against two young girls in Vietnam, for which he again was jailed.
