“What’s it called? Cumbernauld.” That was the slogan used to promote Cumbernauld on televisions across Scotland, and despite enjoying a measured reception, families soon gravitated towards the town. Created as a antidote to the cramped housing conditions in post-war Glasgow, Cumbernauld has become the 7th largest settlement in Scotland, with over 50,000 people calling it home. Cumbernauld became Scotland’s third New Town in 1955, and was immortalised in film when Gregory’s Girl, the 1981 film starring John Gordon Sinclair as the awkward adolescent, documented teenage life in the town. Cumbernauld was on the map. The press has not always reflected Cumbernauld’s successes: there has been the Plook On The Plinth, of course, when its town centre was awarded – not once but twice, in 2001 and 2005 – the less than welcome accolade of being Scotland’s worst carbuncle. Channel Four’s programme Demolition also voted it the worst building in Britain. Controversial, but Cumbernauld is greater than the sum of its parts, and enjoys low unemployment, and above average earnings. Despite its questionable aesthetic merits, Cumbernauld’s town centre was one of the first shopping centres in the UK, it was a beacon of modernity, and as such is an important part of the country’s history. So too is its football team, Clyde FC. The Bully Wee play their football at Broadwood Stadium, and while their travails in the Scottish First Division may not be easy on the eye, Scottish football would not be the same without them
