Within the South East area of Hampshire is the village of Liphook which grew from the need for a coaching stop in the area for travellers on their way from the London to Portsmouth stagecoach run, and where better to stop than the centre of the settlement and that is how the Royal Anchor Inn came to be. The present location is said to have been an inn as far back as the 14th century however the present building traces its history back to the 16th century and it has entertained such important guests as Nelson and Lady Hamilton as well as Queen Victoria and Wellington. The Royal Anchor is to be found right in the centre of the village at The Square. From these beginnings Liphook grew into the village it is today, it benefits from excellent road and rail links making it a popular location for the commuter. Nearby is a popular health spa known as Forest Mere but probably better known as Champneys also close by is the Hollycombe Steam Collection – a collection of working steam powered attractions. The main attraction though of Liphook though is the village and its amenities together with the surrounding countryside. One final point for those currently enjoying the BBC series Lark Rise to Candleford – this series is an adaptation of the work of Flora Thompson who from 1916 to 1928 lived in Liphook.
