In years gone by, the Strand was one of London's most glamorous streets, lined with palatial mansions overlooking the Thames. By Victorian times, it had become a lively centre for theatre and nightlife. However, the construction of Victoria Embankment in the 1860s stole the Strand's riverside location, and the development of new roads and buildings in the early 1900s led to the destruction of numerous theatres. Today, the Strand is a busy thoroughfare stretching from Fleet Street to Trafalgar Square, with plenty of sights worth seeing. Various theatres remain, notably the Adelphi, the Vaudeville, the Savoy, which adjoins the five-star Savoy Hotel (with its famous Grill), and the Lyceum, nearby in Wellington Street. Local restaurants include Dickens' old haunt, Simpsons-In-The-Strand, which still serves traditional British roast beef from silver, domed trolleys. A popular attraction in the Strand is Somerset House, a neo-classical building containing an art gallery and two museums - with outdoor ice-skating in the winter. Next door is King's College, built in 1829. The Royal Courts of Justice are housed in spectacular neo-Gothic surroundings, while two wonderful churches tower over the traffic: Sir Christopher Wren's 17th Century St Clement Danes, and St Mary-le-Strand, which dates back to 1717.
